Women's Volleyball Weekly Release - Week 4
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Ivy League women's volleyball moves into the heart of the schedule with four travel partner matches highlighting the week's action on the courts.
Princeton is the first on the courts this week in home debut vs. Seton Hall Tuesday night. Brown and Yale step out of conference mid-week with their final non-League matches then clash Saturday evening in New Haven, Conn., for each team's Ivy openers. Cornell plays one of its final non-Ivy contests Friday night, hosting Binghamton, before welcoming Columbia to Ithaca, N.Y., Saturday to open its League slate. Penn and Princeton renew their rivalry Friday night while the League's top two teams, Dartmouth and Harvard, collide in Cambridge, Mass., Saturday evening.
Last weekend, the Ancient Eight closed out the early season
tournament play on a positive note with a 10-6 record on the final
Saturday. Columbia, Dartmouth and Yale led the way each posting 2-0
records.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dartmouth senior middle blocker Annie Villanueva
(Santa Barbara, Calif.) made her mark for the Big Green this past
week, leading the team to a 4-0 record and earning all-tournament
team honors in the Dartmouth Invitational.
Villanueva committed only three attack errors for an outstanding .571 hitting percentage, tallying 43 kills on 70 total attempts over the course of the four matches, to increase her Ivy Leag-leading season hitting percentage to .415. In three of the four contests, she hit over .600. For the week, she totaled 11 total blocks for 0.85 blocks per set.
In Dartmouth's mid-week match at Holy Cross, Villanueva had a season-high 15 kills, adding five digs and three block assists. In the Dartmouth Invitational, she led the Big Green to three-straight 3-0 wins with 21 kills, four digs and eight block assists.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Yale freshman outside hitter Mollie Rogers (San
Diego, Calif.) continued her standout rookie season with three
double-doubles and another all-tournament selection last weekend at
the Yale Classic.
Rogers started the weekend with 10 kills, 15 digs, four aces, two assists and hit .364 in a sweep of New Hampshire. The next afternoon, Rogers hit a stellar .625 with 10 kills, 13 digs, two solo blocks and two assists in a 3-0 win over Quinnipiac. She was instrumental in a come-from-behind, five-set win over Army. Rogers had 11 kills, 23 digs, two solo blocks, an assist and an ace against the Black Knights.
On the year, Rogers leads the Bulldogs in kills and kills per set, and ranks second on the squad in digs. She also ranks among the top 10 in kills (sixth) and digs (ninth) within the Ivy League. She has been named to the all-tournament team in all three preseason events this year.
