Women's Volleyball Weekly Release - Week 5
PRINCETON, N.J. -- It's the second season for Ivy League women's volleyball as the schedule turns to the first full weekend of conference play this weekend.
Dartmouth enters the heart of the Ivy slate with a League-best 9-3 record and on a five-match winning streak, dating back to Sept. 13 at Holy Cross. The Big Green leads the Ivies in hitting percentage (.240), opponent hitting percentage (.143), kills per set (13.00) and digs per set (18.00). The key to Dartmouth's success has been senior outside hitter Madeline Baird, who enters the weekend third all-time on the school's career kills list with 1,087.
Princeton (8-5, 1-0 Ivy League) gave its first-year head coach Sabrina King a thrill in her first League match as her Tigers rallied from being down 2-1 to defeat 2010 Ivy co-champion Penn in five sets. Princeton looks to keep that momentum going this weekend in Dillion Gym as it plays host to Harvard and Dartmouth.
Columbia, Harvard and Yale each have a 7-4 record entering the bulk of the Ivy schedule. In its opening Ivy match, Columbia came back from a two-set deficit to win at Cornell, the first Lions' win in Ithaca, N.Y. for head coach Jon Wilson. Yale started its League ledger with a 3-0 sweep of Brown, while Harvard was edged by Dartmouth in a five-set thriller.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Princeton senior middle blocker Cathryn Quinn
(Pacific Palisades, Calif.) led the Tigers to a 3-2 comeback win
over Penn with 15 kills and eight blocks, as well as four assists
and four digs. In the crucial fifth set, she accounted for five of
Princeton's last six points (three blocks, two kills).
Against Seton Hall earlier in the week, Quinn totaled nine kills, four digs, five blocks and an assist from her middle position.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Princeton freshman setter Ginny Willis (Tampa,
Fla.) was superb in her Ivy League debut, guiding the Tigers to a
3-2 comeback win over Penn. He tallied 48 assists and 10 digs in
the win, converting on her only two kills. In the final two sets of
the match, Willis led Princeton to a .271 hitting percentage in the
fourth set and a .389 hitting percentage in the decisive fifth
set.
Earlier in the week against Seton Hall, Willis recorded 39 assists, six digs and 2 block assists. For the week, she averaged 10.88 assists per set.
